Board signs mutual-aid agreement with Fort Riley fire department

Gary Burgess, the county’s Emergency Management Director and fire chief, recommended the board sign the routine mutual‑aid agreement with Fort Riley, saying the agreement formalizes reciprocal assistance when resources are available. He reminded the board the current form is Fort Riley’s standard and typically is reviewed whenever there is a change in command.
"If they need help and they're available, they'll come out with us. If they need help, we'll go help them and stuff," Burgess said while summarizing how the agreement operates in practice. Commissioners moved to approve and signed the mutual‑aid agreement; the motion carried.
Burgess also briefed the commission on the ISO rating process and noted the county previously had an unexpectedly low score; he asked the board to authorize outreach to Verisk/ISO for a follow‑up and to pursue improvements (tankers, training and station recognition) that can lower rates for areas inside five miles of rated stations.
Next steps: county staff will execute the mutual‑aid agreement and Burgess will file a letter with ISO to begin a one‑on‑one review to pursue possible rating improvements.
