Committee proposes viewshed protections and tribal collaboration for Lower Lake cultural resources

"The county should work collaboratively with tribes to identify and preserve tribal cultural assets, including viewsheds," the Chair said, recommending the committee add policy 3.95 and supporting design guidelines so development along ridgelines blends into the landscape rather than dominating sacred views. Members noted that locations of sensitive resources are often confidential and stressed tribal leadership in identification and decisions about disclosure.
Committee members supported including tribes in future consultations, carrying implementing language forward into the May public draft, and checking with the Heritage Commission and tribal contacts to develop culturally appropriate procedures.
