Vergennes council approves contractors for new salt shed project

City Manager Ron Redmond opened a July 11 special meeting of the Vergennes City Council to request authorization for Vergennes Public Works to serve as general contractor for a new salt shed and to procure multiple contractors to complete the project by late Fall 2025. Redmond read the procurement plan, which listed Sheehan Excavation ($31,500) for site work; D & F Excavating & Paving Inc. ($35,000) for paving; Glen Peck Electric ($12,944.30) for electrical services; Iron Horse Structures ($188,500) for the shed structure; Limoge & Sons ($19,030) for an overhead door; and Pike Industries ($15,000) for aggregate.
Redmond noted that bids from Iron Horse Structures and Limoge & Sons were the lowest and pointed to the City's purchasing-policy EXCEPTIONS, specifically "#5 EMERGENCY PURCHASES," which allows the City Manager to award contracts to meet a public emergency without following the full bid process. Deputy Mayor Dickie Austin moved to approve the purchase of the salt shed structure from Iron Horse Structures; Alderman Mark Koenig seconded. The council voted 5-0 to approve the purchase.
The approval gives Vergennes Public Works responsibility to coordinate the listed vendors and oversee completion of the project. Mayor Chris Bearor said he had confidence in the department to execute the work. The council also voted separately to approve the listed vendors for site work, paving, electrical, doors, and aggregate as described on the agenda.
