Chair Jocelyn Scudder opened the strategic-planning session and framed the commission’s work around three prioritized goals: policy changes to strengthen protections, securing the future vitality of the county museum, and boosting education and outreach. “I think 3 feels digestible,” Chair Jocelyn Scudder said as the group considered a three-year planning horizon.
A staff member summarized proposed actions that correspond to those goals, saying: “So those are the 3 big goals I have,” and outlined next steps including drafting language to combine related commissions and to pursue preservation policy changes before council. Commissioners agreed the code currently references historic areas and sites and that modest language changes to include “historic and cultural resources” could allow the commission to formally support museum stewardship, archives, and programming.
Members asked staff to prepare a recommendation and timeline for council; several indicated January would be a reasonable target to present a proposed ordinance or recommendation. The commission did not take a formal vote at the retreat but asked staff to circulate a written plan for the group to review individually ahead of the January meeting.
