Public health director outlines vaccine access, radon and PFAS testing plans

Public health director Lisa Walter briefed the board on multiple public-health initiatives and partnerships. Walter said the department has contracted with Vaxphere to supply vaccines and related supplies (needles, syringes, alcohol pads) and that the county will retain administration revenue while providing vaccines to anyone in the county regardless of insurance. "They will pay for our vaccine... they give us needles and syringes and alcohol pads for free," Walter said.
Walter also described population-health projects: tablets to support telehealth visits at public libraries, a radon-measurement specialist course that will expand local radon testing ability, distribution of free radon test kits, and participation in the Iowa Cancer Consortium for outreach and potential funding. She said the state has contacted the county about PFAS testing for drinking water and that testing would likely be processed through the state hygienic lab, with the county receiving an administration fee for sample handling.
