"This proclamation declares the 1st Friday in June to be National Gun Violence Awareness Day in the school district of Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools," Carpenter said, citing national and state statistics in the proclamation text and urging community support for prevention efforts. Board members asked staff to note implications for employees who wear uniforms on that workday; "we will make sure we note that," one board member said.
The board moved and seconded the measure and approved it by roll call. The proclamation includes outreach guidance for staff and students and encourages wearing orange on June 5 to recognize victims and survivors. The superintendent’s office and the prevention team will follow up with communication to schools and families about participation and operational details.
