Elementary principals presented building needs and described concrete parent-engagement and attendance strategies that they said have led to improvements.
Douglas Elementary and TA Edison principals described daily phone-call time for teachers to reach families, use of parent communication folders, family advocacy events and targeted attendance interventions including porch visits and attendance 1-on-1 meetings. "We call every family every day and ask, why are you not here today? What can we do to support you?" one principal said, describing both preventative outreach and incentives for improvement.
Principals and district staff told the board Title I funds are the primary source for after-school tutoring at the elementary level and that some schools have used those funds for programs while others have struggled to staff after-school slots. Board members asked that principals provide deeper narratives and clearer inputs in future needs assessments so the board can weigh budget priorities.
