Avon awards $8,000 in community event grants and approves Lions Club fireworks for October carnival

Grants approved were $3,500 to the Avon Lions Club for its October 2–4 carnival, $3,500 to the New England Ballet Theatre for the Farmington Valley Dance Festival (Aug. 14–16), and $1,000 to the Girl Scouts to support a family fun run (Sept. 13). The grant vote carried 4-0-1; Mrs. Barthel abstained because she volunteers with the Girl Scouts.
Chairman Polhamus and staff noted the grant program’s intent is to address safety and support for community events; when asked what the Lions Club does with any proceeds, Ms. Heidi Zacchera said of the organization: "anything they raise always goes back to the community wherever there is a need." The Council also approved the Lions Club request to hold fireworks for the carnival, with an estimated cost of $10,000 for the display.
