Avon approves $822,120 lease-purchase with Apple for high-school devices

The Avon Town Council approved a resolution June 25 authorizing the town, on behalf of the Board of Education, to execute a Lease Purchase Agreement with Apple Inc. and Payment Schedule No. 20000051356 in an amount not to exceed $822,120. The motion was made by Ms. Ausiello and seconded by Mrs. Barthel and passed unanimously.
Tom Kline, Director of Information Technology, described the plan to acquire Apple Neo devices for the high school: "the plan is to purchase 1,000 Apple Neos for students at the high school for approximately 940 students and will have spares for breaks/fixes and enrollment changes and 140 for staff," and said Apple provides a guaranteed buyback price at lease end. Kline also said the financial model showed "almost a $1 million savings versus what we have been doing" under the town's prior device-replacement approach. He told the council the order would be placed the next day with a target to have devices by August 15.
Kline said the town will purchase AppleCare+ for schools to cover accidental damage (covering damage other than obvious intentional damage twice a year during the four-year lease). The Board of Finance and Board of Education had previously approved the plan, and staff said K-2 will return to a shared cart model while high-school students will be issued 1:1 devices under the new lease.
