Avon council awards $1,947,474 contract to replace Tillotson Road bridge

The Avon Town Council voted unanimously June 25 to award a contract to Yield Industries of Torrington to replace the Tillotson Road Bridge over Thompson Brook. Chairman Polhamus led the special meeting and the motion to award the contract was made by Ms. Ausiello and seconded by Mrs. Bratton; all four members present voted in favor.

The Assistant Town Manager told the council the project is approved under the CTDOT State Local Bridge Program and that "all eligible costs for the project, including soft costs and construction are reimbursable at 50%." She said the town expects to appropriate $970,000 on July 1 toward the project and that $2.3 million is budgeted over multiple years to cover construction, contingencies and inspection services. She told the council the town is "looking to get started as soon as possible as there are some environmental restrictions that require us to complete work in the water prior to October."

The resolution awarded the contract to Yield Industries in an amount not to exceed $1,947,474. Council members asked about past work with Yield Industries; the Assistant Town Manager said the contractor previously worked on a Scoville Road sidewalk project and other town work, and that the owner’s related company performed interior renovations and HVAC work at the Senior Center. The Council recorded the award formally at the meeting.

Next steps noted at the meeting include finalizing the contract documents and beginning work subject to environmental timing constraints and CTDOT program requirements.
