Chief Waddell briefed the council on a slate of police initiatives. He said the department has updated patches and badges and created a challenge-coin program to recognize community members or agencies that perform notable service. "Each of our officers got 3 points. 1 for them to carry... 1 to give to somebody that they witnessed doing something in the community that's above and beyond," the chief said about the coin program.
The chief also provided an update on ES-CAD work (county and vendor coordination ongoing), described a nascent regional training coalition for small agencies to share resources, and announced a donated Comfort Wellness canine that will be handled in a community-handler model. On drones he reiterated the department already has a drone policy and two operators and will integrate the newly donated aircraft under that policy.
Councilors responded positively to the community-recognition and training initiatives and asked staff to continue updates as projects progress.
