Council allows lower coverage for Scandinavian Festival food vendors, keeps higher standard for alcohol booths

Mary Pelkey, vendor chair for the Scandinavian Cultural Foundation, told the council the festival has historically required a $1,000,000 per-occurrence certificate with a $2,000,000 aggregate and said vendors would be hurt if the city imposed a $2,000,000 per-occurrence requirement for all vendors. “We would like to ask the council to allow us to continue to ask for $1,000,000 per occurrence with a $2,000,000 aggregate for our vendors,” Pelkey said.
A city staff member said the city contacted its insurer, which reviewed the request and recommended approving a lower per-occurrence limit for food and nonalcohol vendors but advised that alcohol vendors present higher risk and should maintain a $2,000,000 per-occurrence requirement. After brief council discussion and disclosure of a councilor’s family involvement in festival booths, Councilor Leach moved to approve the adjustment and the motion passed unanimously, 5-0. The council or staff will document the distinction so vendors receive clear written guidance moving forward.
