A committee member raised concerns about large student activity fund balances at two high schools and urged staff to ask principals for plans to spend down or reallocate the money.
"Hilton Head High School with a fund balance of $543,665, and Boston High is $533,546," the committee member said, noting the differences compared with other high schools. The committee member suggested the committee reach out to the principals and, if schools cannot justify retaining large balances, consider redistribution.
Finance staff said they would contact both principals and the executive director (Dr. Cox) and request a plan for spending down those funds by June 30 or explain why the balances remain. Staff also noted some seasonal expenditures (proms, graduations) affect balances late in the fiscal year and said they will monitor actual spend-through as the year closes.
Committee members asked staff to clarify allowable uses for student activity funds and to return to finance with greater detail if needed.
