Commission waives fairgrounds fee for Special Olympics meet-and-greet on July 23

Organizers for the Special Olympics asked the commission to waive the standard fee to use the Fairgrounds Fine Arts Building for a two-hour meet-and-greet on the evening of July 23. Kayla Bingham described efforts to rebuild and expand the program; Matt Rose provided participation estimates and supporter outreach.
"There's roughly estimated 1,600 children... that is from age 3 to 21," Matt Rose said while outlining local participation needs. Commissioners discussed alternate local venues and logistics and noted future facility-use rules may require fees to cover county staffing. Commissioner Perry moved to approve the waiver and Commissioner Bingham seconded; the motion passed by voice vote.
Organizers said they will secure liability insurance once the event is approved and will continue outreach to increase participation in sports programs. Staff noted future facility-use rules are being updated and that similar waivers may incur costs going forward.
