The Klamath Falls City Schools board voted unanimously Oct. 13 to adopt updated policy JFCEB and administrative regulation JFCEB-AR, which restrict student use of personal electronic devices during instructional time in response to an executive order from Governor Tina Kotek.
Renee Clark, director of human resources, told the board the revisions mirror Oregon School Boards Association model language and are intended to ensure the district meets the state's implementation timeline (first reading completed Oct. 13; adoption required by Oct. 31 and full implementation by Jan. 1). "The policy aligns with the Governor's directive and is largely based on OSBA model language to ensure legal consistency across districts," Clark said. Kathy Hewitt moved to approve the policy, Nicole Trejo seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Board members did not request substantive edits during the meeting. The district will proceed with the adoption timeline so staff and families can prepare for implementation on Jan. 1, including communicating expectations and operational details to schools.
The action obligates district administration to finalize procedures consistent with the adopted regulation and to provide guidance to building leaders and teachers ahead of the implementation date.
