In closing remarks before adjournment, Mayor Bob Pape criticized his election opponent for what he described as persistent online attacks this summer and for repeatedly confronting residents at city events. He said accusations that he does not live in Merriam were unfounded and recounted an incident in which his opponent visited a private residence with a videographer.
"When you attack my family, my girlfriend, and my friends, you have reached a new low," Pape said, and urged residents that "this election may be the most important Merriam has ever experienced" and to vote on Nov. 4. These remarks were presented as the mayor's personal observations and no council action followed from them.
