The La Grande School District No.1 board convened a special work session on Jan. 22, 2025 to review progress on its Strategic Plan across multiple indicators. Chair Danelle Lindsey opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m.; Superintendent George Mendoza and several administrators presented details about culture of care, attendance, safety and facilities work underway across district campuses.
District staff highlighted concrete steps under Indicator 1A (Culture of Care) and 1B (Attendance): Erika Dockweiler described ongoing staff trainings including PBIS, CPI and DESSA and noted consultant Michael Sedler will make two additional visits this school year to support new teachers. Chris Wagner summarized refinements to the truancy process, saying "All students receive a quarterly attendance letter showing families where their student's attendance compares with other students in their grade level," and Mendoza outlined resources the district is providing families to support attendance. The board was told overall attendance is showing improvement.
The report covered safety and facilities under Indicators 1C and 1D. Assistant Superintendent Scott Carpenter previewed upcoming emergency preparedness trainings and a reunification process; Brad Sunderman listed recently completed projects (LHS trophy cases; replacement of an LHS boiler; vinyl wrap for the Plant Ops front windows; LMS hardscape and asphalt) and described planned projects including an LMS roof repair and remodeling the front of La Grande High School. Mendoza said he would like an extra scoreboard installed at Greenwood and to replace the district's 75‑year‑old boilers; the district plans to apply for another OSCIM grant in 2025.
The board convened an executive session at 8:57 p.m. and reconvened at 9:58 p.m.; no public votes or formal motions were recorded during the session. The meeting adjourned with announcements of future meeting dates and agenda items including the superintendent evaluation and the Budget Committee calendar.
