Superintendent urges board advocacy to state; district plans seismic and building grants

Superintendent George Mendoza told board members that the legislature needs to hear from school board members as well as superintendents, saying, "Board Members need to advocate at the state level." Mendoza said the district is collecting data to support state-paid stipends for staff who provide Special Education services and expects those stipends to be paid from the state in the spring.
Mendoza also said the district will apply for a seismic grant to address the LMS roof replacement and intends to pursue an OSCIM grant at the end of 2025 to replace the Wood/Ag building at La Grande High School. The board discussed outreach and agreed to revise and re-send an advocacy letter and to invite legislators to visit La Grande in January or February.
