Superintendent George Mendoza told the board Oct. 23 that projected increases in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) could "potentially cost LGSD around 1 million dollars," a district estimate raised during discussion of 2025 legislative priorities.
Board members said the impact will be felt in budget planning and contrasted La Grande SD’s situation with that of larger districts that have sought state relief. Director Merle Comfort said he was frustrated that some larger districts appear to receive bailout assistance when they under-budget, while La Grande SD continues to budget conservatively.
