Board conducts first reading of multiple policy updates including special education and abuse reporting

The board received a first reading of several policy updates on Sept. 11 covering nondiscrimination, board conduct, suspected child abuse reporting, special education (IEP and procedural safeguards), Section 504, communicable disease guidance, immunization and school sports participation, corporal punishment, and restraint/seclusion. Superintendent George Mendoza reviewed the recommended changes and told directors that, if no further edits are submitted, these policies will be listed on the Oct. 9 consent agenda for approval.
The packet contained multiple policy texts and administrative rules; Mendoza noted that some policies may affect collective bargaining and that certain definitions (for example, parent) are related to particular policies. No policy vote occurred at the Sept. 11 meeting because this was a first reading.
