District highlights special-education coaching, aims for full staff training on culture of care

Chair Danelle Lindsey opened the Aug. 28 special board meeting where Director Erika Dockwieler outlined expanded special-education coaching and support delivered in coordination with Michael Sedler and Dr. Will Henson. Assistant Superintendent Scott Carpenter added that CDC grants launched programs for student and staff wellbeing and that the districtwide SWIS behavior-tracking system is now in use across schools.
Dockwieler described the coaching and paraprofessional supports as central to the district’s “Culture of Care” indicator; Carpenter said those tools, together with early-warning systems for at-risk students, are helping La Grande track behavior trends and target interventions. The board was presented with the district goal of 100% staff training on Culture of Care strategies and ongoing steps to meet that target.
