Merriam council approves $2.8M federal funding agreement for Merriam Drive project

Director Kumpke told the council the Merriam Drive project (55th to 50th Terrace) is under design with construction planned for 2027 and that staff secured more than $2,800,000 in federal grant funds to support the work. To accept the funds the city must execute an agreement with the Kansas Secretary of Transportation and amend the design agreement with Olson Inc. to reflect required language and design criteria.
Kumpke said the amendment addresses design criteria, progress reporting and schedule requirements; because the design contract is already approved, the amendment aligns contract language with KDOT and federal requirements. The council approved the agreement and amendment on a unanimous voice roll call. Council also discussed contractor schedule issues on separate nearby projects and acknowledged staff will work with counsel on potential contract remedies where completion timelines were missed.
The authorization allows staff to finalize the KDOT agreement and proceed with amended design terms necessary to draw down the federal funds for the Merriam Drive corridor improvements.
