The Community Development Committee opened with a proclamation recognizing Jewish American Heritage Month. Alan Edelman, a board member of the Jewish Community Relations Bureau/AJC, accepted the proclamation and framed the month as a time to learn about and from Jewish Americans' contributions to civic life. "Jewish American Heritage Month is an opportunity for all of us, regardless of background, to learn from one another," Edelman said.
The meeting also featured a presentation honoring Rushton Elementary's 5th grade Arbor Day poster contest winner, Lily Petroli. Parks staff said the contest drew a record 108 votes at the Powell Community Center and that Lily’s poster captured 25% of the vote. Staff noted the city submitted selected posters to the Kansas Forest Service and that Rushton’s participation helped Mission qualify as Tree City USA for the 24th straight year.
