The Waterford Design Review Board voted unanimously April 7 to approve a site plan for Congregation Beth El’s proposed synagogue at 33 Canyon Road.
Mike Ott, a professional engineer and land surveyor with Summerhill Civil Engineers, presented the project team and turned the technical overview to architect Dave Atkinson. "The congregation would like to build a new synagogue here at 33 Canyon Road," Ott said, briefing the board on the application and noting the plans submitted for review.
Dave Atkinson, the project architect, described a modest, single‑story building with a vaulted sanctuary and supporting spaces. "The sanctuary has a vaulted ceiling, from about 12 feet to about 15 feet," Atkinson said. He told the board the sanctuary will seat about "100, hundred and 20 people tops," and that the building footprint is under 4,000 square feet with a ridge height of about 24 feet.
Board members questioned site details including parking, lighting and mechanical equipment locations before the vote. After discussion, Chair called for a motion "to accept these" plans as presented; a member moved, Joy seconded, and the board voted in favor. The team said they will correct a minor legend mismatch on the photometric plan and finalize equipment locations in follow-up submissions.
The approval permits the applicant to move forward with the design as presented; the board did not record any conditions beyond the plan corrections discussed at the meeting.
