Cashmere board hears first reading for proposed Health Sciences CTE materials

CTE Director Rebecca Swanson presented the board with a first reading of proposed Health Sciences instructional materials, recommending adoption of Cengage’s Medical Terminology for Health Professionals alongside Reality Works workbooks and Paxton Patterson College & Career Ready Labs. After piloting the textbook and course for a year, the district’s Health Sciences Advisory Board "recommends bringing this curriculum to the Board for an official first reading, with the goal of adopting it this school year," Ms. Swanson said.
Ms. Swanson told the Board that neighboring districts have piloted and adopted the same materials and that CTE staff visited those districts to observe classroom use. She said the advisory board includes administrators, CTE staff, parent/community members and medical community representatives and is completing the district-required materials review. "The materials are available for review and I would like to come back to a future meeting to make a final request for approval and purchase of the curriculum," she added.
If adopted, the materials would align the high school course with Wenatchee Valley College’s Allied Health program and add Paxton Patterson hands-on lab components to support college-and-career readiness. The Board received the first reading; Ms. Swanson indicated the next step is a return visit with a formal purchase request and adoption vote.
