Board reviews K–12 counseling and SEBMH plan after wellness survey shows high participation

Superintendent Johnson introduced the district’s K–12 Counseling and SEBMH Plan, explaining it as a coordinated framework for academic, social‑emotional, behavioral and mental‑health supports from kindergarten through 12th grade. Vale Principal Sean McKenna reviewed the plan’s development and procedures for recognizing, screening, responding to and documenting incidents; McKenna said the plan and resources document is a "living, continuously updated resource."
Shelley Seslar, Managing Director for Behavioral Health Services at NCESD, thanked staff for their work, noted strong practices at the building level and outlined areas needing additional support. Johnson told the Board the district’s recent wellness survey achieved "over 90% student participation," and said NCESD’s assistance will continue as the district implements the plan.
