The Chewelah City Council appointed Blake Weirs to fill Council Position No. 1 following an executive session on qualifications held Jan. 7, 2026. Mayor Lindsey Baxter called the executive session at 7:04 p.m. under RCW 42.30.110(1)(h) and extended it at 7:18 p.m.; the council reconvened at 7:26 p.m. Councilmember Bruce Nupp nominated Weirs and John Kabosky seconded; the subsequent roll-call vote was unanimous.
Mike Waters, the city attorney, administered the oath of office to Blake Weirs in the reopened meeting. The appointment concluded a process that began with interviews of three candidates for the vacancy; the council had previously voted to adjust the meeting agenda to hear Special Business earlier in the meeting.
The council’s action followed the executive-session evaluation of candidates’ qualifications and replaces the temporary vacancy for Position No. 1. No individual roll-call votes by name were recorded in the minutes beyond the unanimous outcome.
