NASS: Large feedlots hold 11.37 million cattle on feed on July 1; smaller lots decline

At the July briefing, NASS reported that feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more contained 11,370,000 head of cattle on July 1, 2026, up 1.5% from 2025 and representing 85.1% of all cattle on feed, Travis Averell said.
Smaller feedlots (capacity under 1,000 head) were at 1,830,000 head, down 46,000 from 2025 and accounting for 13.9% of cattle on feed, he said. Averell showed multi-year charts of cattle on feed to provide context, noting historical lows and highs in the series.
