The National Agricultural Statistics Service presented a preliminary 2026 calf-crop estimate of 32,500,000 head, a 1.5% decline from 2025, Travis Averell said at the July briefing.
Averell broke the estimate into halves: the first half (Jan.–Jun.) was 23,900,000 head (down 1.6% from the prior year) and the second-half expected births were reported at 8,600,000 head (down 1.1%). He emphasized the 2026 figure is preliminary and that NASS will further review the calf crop in January 2027. The materials distributed with the briefing include the underlying series and charts for analysts and producers.
