NASS: Preliminary 2026 calf crop estimated at 32.5 million head, down 1.5%

The National Agricultural Statistics Service presented a preliminary 2026 calf-crop estimate of 32,500,000 head, a 1.5% decline from 2025, Travis Averell said at the July briefing.
Averell broke the estimate into halves: the first half (Jan.–Jun.) was 23,900,000 head (down 1.6% from the prior year) and the second-half expected births were reported at 8,600,000 head (down 1.1%). He emphasized the 2026 figure is preliminary and that NASS will further review the calf crop in January 2027.
