Board adopts full-instructional-day ban on personal electronic devices

District staff presented a recommended policy change to comply with the state law limiting students’ access to wireless communication and personal electronic devices during instructional time; the board voted to adopt the recommended policy and administrative guidelines.
Superintendent Gibson told trustees the recommended policy defines the instructional day as the beginning to the end of the school day and would restrict phones, smartwatches, AirPods and other personal electronic devices during that period. “So, our policy will state that students are not allowed to have wireless communication or personal electronic devices,” Gibson said. He also said staff will update administrative guidelines and the student code of conduct after board approval.
Trustees asked practical questions about parent–school contact and discipline. Gibson described a progressive-discipline approach proposed by the high school team — starting with expectations for phones to be kept "off and away," steps such as end-of-day pickup for a first offense and parent pickup for repeated offenses, and an in-office system to temporarily secure devices if necessary.
The motion to adopt the board policy and administrative guidelines passed by roll call (6–0). Staff said the change will require parent communication and training for staff before implementation at the start of the school year.
