Eastpointe board certifies $99 million school bond proposal for November ballot

Superintendent Gibson presented the district’s recommended 2026 school improvement bond and asked the board to certify the ballot language for the November election.
Gibson said the package has been scaled back from earlier versions and is now a $99,000,000 project, about an $11,000,000 reduction from the April presentation. “We have a $99,000,000 project at this time,” Gibson told trustees. He said the plan would include roughly 252,000 square feet of renovation and new construction at the high school campus (to house grades 6–8 and 9–12 with separate entrances), accessibility upgrades to the pool, building-envelope work, HVAC and power upgrades, and site improvements.
The bond would also address the district’s early learning center (ELC) with roughly 34,931 square feet of renovation to fix boilers, pumps, HVAC and envelope problems and add interior renovations and teacher workspaces. Gibson said the estimate on the tax impact of the recommended plan is about 3.5 new mills (a 1.5-mil reduction from the April plan) and described outreach the district conducted, including public feedback sessions and a preliminary application approved by the Department of Treasury.
Trustees moved and approved a resolution to certify the bond proposition for the ballot; staff said an informational campaign would begin July 28 and election day is Nov. 3.
Next steps include finalizing ballot language with the election coordinator and moving forward with scheduled community outreach.
