Lucas Kahe, medical director of Midwest Street Medicine Aberdeen, told the council the volunteer organization provides low-barrier, no-cost medical care, social work and peer-support services to people who are unhoused or housing-insecure and has operated regularly since mid-2024.
"We are a volunteer organization that seeks to provide low barrier, no cost medical care to members of our community that are unhoused, housing insecure or members of chronically underserved populations," Kahe said. He said the group has roughly 30 volunteers and was approached by the city to consider taking over a city-owned parcel at 824 3rd Avenue SW to expand services including mental-health and addiction-care supports.
The council approved a first reading of a rezoning request to align the city parcel with surrounding high-density residential zoning in preparation for possible surplusing. Council praised the volunteer group's work and indicated support for the concept while following required processes for property disposition.
