The City of Aberdeen council approved a $250,000 pledge to the Dakota Prairie Museum—xpansion campaign, a move Patricia, the museum director, said would unlock a $1,000,000 challenge grant from the Buntrock Foundation and reduce the museum's remaining fundraising goal.
"Tonight, we're asking you to partner with us with a $250,000 pledge," Patricia said during her presentation, describing a plan that would add exhibit galleries, a children's discovery zone and expanded collection storage. She said the museum has set a $7.5 million fundraising target for the core project and that architect estimates place a fuller build-out in a $10–15 million range.
Patricia told the council the museum has seen attendance rise roughly 36% above its average this year and serves more than 20,000 visitors annually, plus more than 8,000 student interactions. She emphasized that the museum remains free to enter and that the requested funds are for capital expansion only, not operations.
Council moved to approve the pledge and the clerk recorded a roll-call vote: Council member Ronen, Foberg, Liebelt, Ward, Johnson, Ekonger, Nelson, Norb Stroop and Mayor Shahnemann all registered "aye." The council and museum representatives said the city commitment will serve as a catalyst for other gifts and foundation matches.
The museum said the city pledge will be combined with an existing $1,000,000 gift and should unlock the Buntrock Foundation challenge, bringing early campaign commitments to about $3,000,000. Council members asked staff to identify funding sources and confirmed the pledge would be drawn from the promotional fund balances across 2026 and 2027 as needed.
