Select Board asks regional planners to study speeds on Jericho Road

After residents flagged poor sight lines and near-misses on a 45-mph section of Jericho Road, the Richmond Select Board voted to ask the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission to conduct a speed study and return a recommendation on a posted speed.
The Richmond Select Board voted to request that the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission conduct a formal speed study of the 45-mile-per-hour portion of Jericho Road.
Resident Chelsea Brooks urged the board to act, describing short sight distances and curves on the upper portion of Jericho Road. "I've lived where I live on Jericho Road for 15 years now...it's the sort of upper part where above where it changes from 35 to 45," Brooks said, adding that unfamiliar drivers sometimes push their speed where visibility is poor. Town Manager Josh Arneson explained the process for a CCRPC study, noting it examines observed speeds, driveways, pedestrian use and other factors and returns a recommended speed to the board.
A motion to request the CCRPC study was moved and seconded and the board approved it. Select Board members recorded their ayes during roll call. The town manager said he would reach out to CCRPC on the board's behalf and report back if the agency indicates an existing study is on file or if a new study is warranted.
The board asked staff to gather any existing speed or crash data and to follow up with CCRPC on timing and next steps.
