Museum plans historical marker to highlight National Guard headquarters at Fort Jackson

Heather McPherson said the museum is pursuing a historical marker to make the public more aware that the site served as a standing headquarters for the National Guard at Fort Jackson, and to highlight the museum’s Guard‑focused collections. "We're getting a historical marker put out front that we're hoping, you know, more more people notice, like, this is your National Guard," McPherson said.

The curators described a deliberate emphasis on guard stories across the museum’s galleries, including modern operations, disaster response, and deployed unit histories. Heather and Chris said they are adding artifacts and oral histories to ensure visitors connect faces and names to service rather than abstract operations. They indicated a historical marker could take one to two years to materialize due to lead times on markers and approvals, but said the project is under consideration and part of a broader effort to raise awareness of the Guard’s role on the compound.
