Maupin accepts $75,000 wildfire-defensible-space grant to fund fuel-reduction work

The Council voted 7-0 to accept a $75,000 Community Wildfire Risk Reduction for Defensible Space Grant awarded to the City of Maupin. City Manager Nick Smith described the award as the third piece of the city's defensible-space program; the funds are intended to reduce fuels along the city edges and to protect high-risk facilities such as the assisted-living facility and the clinic.
Simone Cordery-Cotter, Fire Risk Reduction Specialist, presented the grant and explained potential activities including creating dozer lines for fire breaks, planting fire-resistant vegetation, and removing fuels. Simone said the Oregon State Fire Marshal "is very pleased to award this grant to Maupin," and added staff can "return any unspent funds at the end of the grant cycle." Councilor Miles moved to authorize acceptance of the grant and Councilor Shelby Dumire seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Council discussion emphasized how this grant ties into prior individual-property grants and the city's broader effort to create defensible space. The acceptance authorizes staff to proceed with planning and implementation steps tied to the grant and to report progress to Council as required.
