Council schedules workshop after debate over employee leave policy and benefits

Mayor Angie Lee read Resolution 2025-TBA on employee classification, compensation and benefits aloud for council discussion on Jan. 13. The council agreed to remove the example language on vacation leave accumulation from the draft and debated how long staff should be allowed to take leaves of absence given limited staffing. Council President Joe Giardelli expressed concern about open-ended leave durations; no final leave-duration limit was adopted at the meeting.
Council discussed parental leave and indicated the draft would change the parental leave provision from eight weeks to two weeks, citing an upcoming reduction in state-level support beginning July 1, 2026. Police Chief Robert Topie requested officers be given birthdays off as a holiday; council declined to add another holiday or pay officers for birthdays. The council set a one-hour workshop prior to the Feb. 10 council meeting (5:00 p.m.) to continue the resolution review.
