Maupin council adopts Donkey Trail Plan, aims to secure funding and preserve trail name

The Maupin City Council voted 7-0 to adopt the Donkey Trail Plan after a staff presentation and public testimony on Dec. 18. Project Manager Nick Gross presented trail concepts and explained how the plan connects to other trails and to grant opportunities; Councilor Mark Roper moved to adopt and Councilor Miles seconded.
Resident Lynn Ewing testified she was "thrilled the Donkey Trail is still in the works" and said that "keeping the name Donkey Trail helps to draw interest in funding." Medy Gantz asked whether the city has discussed acquiring the property under the trail; Ewing said the owner had previously been willing to grant an easement. Councilor Mike Foreaker asked whether the trail should be designed to future street standards in case a segment needed to be converted; Gross said the team "did take into account if this needed to be a road for several hundred feet" and noted bollards could prevent vehicle access where appropriate.
Councilors emphasized the plan's role in improving eligibility for grants and in preserving pedestrian connectivity. The plan adoption gives staff a framework to pursue funding and to negotiate easements or other access agreements with property owners as needed.
