David McKinley, post commander of VFW Post 12186, asked the group to endorse and help host a junior ROTC drill-and-ceremonies competition planned for Oct. 24. "We have the application that's going in requesting for October 24, and, we hope to have your not just approval, but recommendation as well as your participation when the event comes up," McKinley said during the open forum, noting the post’s new location on Saint Petersburg Drive across from the city library and co-located with the Moose Lodge.
McKinley said the event would engage Dunedin High School’s junior ROTC unit and provide opportunities for veterans and families through resource direction and community activities. No formal vote or motion was recorded at the meeting; the request was presented for the board’s consideration and potential future action. The post commander said he would be available to answer questions and follow up as the application progresses.
