Burke County commissioners voted unanimously on July 27 to meet as the Board of Health on a semi‑annual basis rather than annually. The change was proposed to strengthen oversight and create more timely opportunities to review departmental performance and emerging public health needs.
"I'm requesting that the board of county commissioners convene as the board of health twice annually," Ashley Garrett said as she requested the schedule change. Commissioners discussed whether the meetings should be separate or paired with pre‑agenda days; Commissioner Barry said a separate meeting might be preferable because Board of Health items could require substantial time for performance review. The board directed staff to propose dates and include the change in the county's annual calendar.
