Students urge leadership as action after HOBY conference

Students who attended the HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth) leadership seminar described workshops on personal, group and service leadership and urged the board to support follow-up activities in district schools. A student speaker summarized a four-day program that included personality profiling, group problem-solving and service sessions and said she planned to introduce a schoolwide "positive mental attitude" program.
"Active leadership is an action, not a position," read a submitted statement from Sofia Brab, who attended HOBY and asked the board to consider a student-led '1000000 Thanks' project to send messages of appreciation to military members. Another presenter said the conference included team competitions, service projects and a gratitude exercise that encouraged students to reach out to people who influenced them.
Board members thanked the students and the Chamber of Commerce for helping fund attendance and noted the students will share their experience at an upcoming Chamber meeting. The presentations were offered as part of the board's new-business agenda and did not require board action.
