Council hears $4.7M–$10M cost range; staff to vet grants and other funding

The city’s three principal cost pathways drew the council’s attention during the workshop: a deep-foundation renovation (~$3.8M construction; ~$4.7M with soft costs), a renovation with addition (~$7.8M), and a new build (demolition/rebuild) on the current site (~$10.7M). Architect Joe Slack told the council those are early estimates and cautioned that soil conditions and inflation could drive numbers higher.
Councilors asked staff to examine outside funding options. Slack highlighted the state seismic rehabilitation grant (a program cited as up to $2.5M) but said eligibility could be constrained by the current station’s location in a flood and tsunami zone. “Because you’re in the flood plain and you’re also in the tsunami zone … the chances are really minimal,” Slack said. The city manager agreed staff will research external funds and report back.
