Residents ask about Lake Buel fireworks; Conservation Commission says it lacks jurisdiction

Jane Beers returned to the Conservation Commission on June 18 to continue discussion about fireworks at Lake Buel. The Commission said it does not have jurisdiction over fireworks but reviewed guidance from the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions (MACC) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection; materials recommended removing fireworks residuals the same evening or early the following morning.
Commission Agent Mary Summers and members discussed that while the Conservation Commission cannot regulate fireworks, there are wetland-protection considerations and local authorities such as the Select Board or Board of Health could be asked to take further action. The Commission advised that residuals should be removed promptly and suggested seeking additional input from the Select Board and the Board of Health.
