Mapleton receives $142,000 food-security grant to link garden produce to cafeteria meals

Mapleton SD 32 staff told the board the district has been awarded a food-security grant from the Lane Community Health Council totaling $142,000 to help move garden produce into school cafeteria meals and to support a community kitchen.
"We did get awarded a grant from Lane Community Health Council. They put out a food and security grant. And so we were awarded a $142,000 to fund a full time position to liaise between, like, the produce in the garden and the cafeteria," a staff member (Speaker 5) said during district reports. The staffer added the award includes roughly $40,000 to equip the community kitchen, funds for architectural work to ensure compliance and design, support for a farmers market and vendor reimbursements, and summer stipends for students working in the gardens.
Board members noted the purchase and renovation work for the kitchen depend on facilities planning and abatement work already under discussion; staff said some funding is set aside specifically for equipment while other renovation dollars may come from separate earlier grants.
