Staff presented a first reading of a policy proposal to allow students to count an athletic season toward PE credit for graduation when combined with PE coursework. "If you do 0.5 of your 1.0 requirement with a class with a PE teacher and then you engage in a season of OSAA sports... you can count that towards up to 0.5," a staff member explained.
The draft includes a required written reflection aligned to the fifth PE standard (valuing lifelong physical activity) for the component not covered directly by sport participation. Some board members questioned whether a written reflection is needed for long-term athletes who have already demonstrated participation across seasons and expressed concern about coaches being put in a gatekeeping role. Staff proposed seeking coach input before bringing the policy back for second reading.
Board members generally supported the idea but asked administration to consult coaches and clarify eligibility and verification procedures before a final vote.
