District plans sensory sidewalks, indoor sensory-room work and OT training

District staff told the board they are power-washing and preparing two elementary sidewalks between the library and primary classrooms and plan to paint sensory pathways (stenciled activities such as hopscotch) within roughly two weeks, using stencils lent by a partner district and donated paint.
"Outdoor ones are great...it's a start towards that," a staff member said, explaining the pathways are intended to provide short, intentional sensory breaks that regulate students who are sensory seeking and help them transition into class. Staff emphasized these outdoor elements are an initial step while the district works on an indoor sensory room but noted limited indoor space constrains how quickly that can proceed.
The staff member said occupational therapy (OT) partners and district OT contractors will provide training and shadowing for staff on Fridays so teachers can learn how to use sensory tools and integrate structured sensory breaks into classroom routines. "It's a very structured experience where they're learning how to take a quick break, meet their sensory needs, and then come back in," staff said when describing the intended function of the space.
Board members asked about staffing and whether students or staff would do the stenciling; staff said they are exploring a community-service opportunity and may involve students or staff volunteers while the partner provides paint. Staff will report back on implementation timing and training opportunities.
