Residents call for more diverse election commission and consistent code enforcement

"Since the retirement last year of Veronica Peoples... the election commission has entirely consisted of elderly white men," said David Amor, who urged public awareness and encouraged residents to contact the election office about representation. Jeanette Churnin and others echoed the call for a commissioner who is a woman or a person of color when the next vacancy arises; speakers stressed the commission’s role overseeing polling places and election judges.
Separately, Aletha Wallace described permit and enforcement problems at 675 Holden Street and identified the property owner by name, saying a large greenhouse-type structure and tree removals occurred without permits. She told council that neighbors had called police and felt the city had not backed them consistently.
Council members acknowledged the concerns; staff and council did not take formal action at the meeting but commenters asked that the issues remain on the public record.
