Seneca explores grant options for fire department; 501(c)(3) requirement complicates eligibility

Fire Chief Mike Allen told the council that Bill from AA&L Repair has offered to assist the department in applying for grants to fund engine-hall insulation and a new gate for the fire-truck entrance. Council members noted that many grant programs require a 501(c)(3) designation, which the city does not have, and therefore the department may not be eligible if it remains a municipal department.
Council discussed alternatives, including creating a special district for the fire department similar to the local Water District, which could align with how other small municipal services operate. Mayor Andrea Officer said she will research the feasibility of a 501(c)(3) or special district option and provide information at the next council meeting.
