Sewer bypass reported after heavy rain; city raises pond levels and reports to KDHE

City Superintendent Steve Pruett told the council that the sewer system experienced a bypass during the most recent storm, which dropped more than three inches of rain. Pruett said the bypass resulted from high inflow and infiltration and that the city reported the event to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). He said all required reporting to KDHE was completed.
To reduce the likelihood of future bypasses, Pruett said he has raised the level of the sewer ponds to increase detention time and will add riprap around the sewer cells. The council discussed drainage and erosion issues elsewhere in town related to private dirt work, and the city attorney was asked to research possible remedies.
