Seneca council approves HECO contract amendments for wastewater work

Seneca City Council on Feb. 11 approved two contract amendments with HECO Engineers related to the city’s Wastewater Project. The first amendment, approved for $10,306, extends HECO’s contract to cover additional engineering work. The second amendment, for $20,391, contracts HECO to develop a lagoon closure plan for the city’s old sewer lagoon.
City Manager/Recorder Raamin Burrell told the council that the lagoon closure work "isn't something that the city staff is capable of doing and recommended that HECO do it." Burrell also explained that the cost of both amendments will be paid from funds already allocated to the Wastewater Project. Councilor Melissa Pettyjohn moved to approve both amendments; Councilor Sue Holliday seconded each motion and the council voted unanimously to adopt them.
The approvals followed council discussion about project timing and contractor responsibilities. Councilor Matt Wenick asked whether R&G Excavating would be charged a fee for exceeding the original contract deadline; Burrell replied there was "no fee because the contract had actually been extended prior to the original end date." The council recorded the motions and signed the contract amendments at the meeting.
